Revamping Monitoring Dashboard
The ECC Monitoring Dashboard is a critical tool used by the Enterprise Command Centre (ECC) to oversee the health and status of applications. The aim of this project was to enhance the dashboard’s usability, optimize the display of additional metrics, and ensure seamless monitoring within a tight timeline. The design focused on streamlining workflows, improving visual feedback, and aligning with technical constraints, including the use of Kibana version 7.11.

What We’ve Done
1. Redesigned the dashboard layout to display all critical metrics on a single screen, minimizing scrolling and enhancing visibility.
2. Conducted stakeholder interviews to gather precise requirements and address key usability challenges.
3. Delivered the revamped dashboard within a 7-day timeline for User Acceptance Testing (UAT), aligning design with Kibana 7.11 constraints.
Creative Process
Heuristic Analysis
I’ve conducted a heuristic evaluation of the existing dashboard to identify usability gaps. Issues included a cluttered interface, insufficient color coding for health alerts, and scattered metric displays. Insights from this analysis guided the redesign strategy to optimize usability and operational clarity.
Stakeholder Research
We initiated the project by engaging with ECC team members and administrators to understand their pain points, priorities, and expectations. These discussions helped identify key challenges, such as limited visibility, lack of real-time alerts, and constraints posed by the existing Kibana 7.11 platform.
Design and Prototyping
Wireframes and prototypes were created using Kibana-compatible design elements. The focus was on clear data visualization, an intuitive interface, and a robust color-coded system (Green, Amber, Red) to highlight application health statuses effectively.
Expandable cards were introduced to simplify the interface, allowing users to toggle secondary statuses seamlessly. Key elements like “last status updates,” dates, and timelines were repositioned for easier access, alongside a legend to easily grasp the color palette and what they stand for.
Usability Testing
The prototypes were tested with ECC operators and administrators to validate design decisions. Feedback highlighted the clarity of the new layout, improved accessibility, and effectiveness of the revised alert system, leading to iterative refinements for a better user experience.
Results
Outcome
The redesigned dashboard significantly enhanced monitoring efficiency, streamlined usability, and met stakeholder expectations within the 7-day timeline, successfully incorporating new metrics and addressing critical operational challenges for the ECC team.
Impact
Improved user satisfaction, simplified workflows, and scalable design enhanced operational visibility, enabling proactive system health management while establishing a robust foundation for future expansions and metric integrations.
Conclusion
The user-centric redesign transformed the dashboard into an intuitive and efficient tool, empowering ECC operators with real-time monitoring capabilities and ensuring seamless adoption across stakeholders, driving operational excellence and business continuity.
